Americans planning an Italian getaway are being reminded to stay alert, particularly while sightseeing or using busy transport networks.

The U.S. State Department’s September 10, 2026 update keeps Italy at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, citing terrorism. Neither the advisory level nor its risk indicator changed. Level 2 asks visitors to take extra precautions; the higher levels advise reconsidering or avoiding travel. Read the official advisory.

Visitors should also protect their belongings. The department describes petty theft as common around popular attractions and on public transportation, including trains. Pickpocketing, bag snatching and vehicle break-ins are among the crimes affecting foreign travelers.

Keep bags attended and avoid storing passports, luggage or valuables in parked cars. Stay aware of your surroundings in crowded places, follow local news, and allow room to adjust your itinerary if conditions change.
